How to Read a Slot Paytable: A Beginner's Complete Guide

The paytable tells you everything about a slot, symbol values, bonus triggers, RTP, and special features. Learn to read it fluently and you will never play blind again.

What is a Paytable?

Every slot machine has a paytable, a screen (or series of screens) that contains all the information about how the game works. Think of it as the slot's rulebook. Accessing it is simple: look for the "i", "?", or "Paytable" button on any slot interface.

Many players skip this entirely and just spin. Do not be one of them. Spending 60 seconds reading the paytable before playing gives you crucial information.

Symbol Values

The first section of most paytables shows symbol payouts. These are displayed as either:

  • A multiplier of your total bet (e.g., 5× = 5 times your stake)
  • A coin value (older games)

Symbols are ranked from lowest to highest value. Common low value symbols are card royals (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9). High value symbols are thematic icons relevant to the game.

Wild Symbols

The Wild symbol substitutes for almost all other symbols to help complete winning combinations. Some Wilds have additional properties:

  • Expanding Wilds : expand to cover an entire reel
  • Sticky Wilds : remain in place for multiple spins
  • Walking Wilds : move one position per spin
  • Multiplier Wilds : apply a multiplier to any wins they help form

Scatter Symbols

Scatter symbols typically do not need to land on a payline : they pay wherever they appear on the reels. Landing a set number (usually 3+) triggers the free spins bonus.

Bonus Triggers

The paytable explains how to trigger every bonus feature. This section tells you how many bonus symbols are needed, what the bonus rewards, whether you can retrigger the bonus, and any special rules during the bonus.

Paylines and Ways to Win

  • Fixed paylines : always active, usually 20–50
  • 243 ways : any matching symbol on adjacent reels pays
  • Megaways : variable reels creating up to 117,649 ways to win
  • Cluster pays : groups of 5+ matching symbols pay regardless of position

RTP and Max Win

Most modern slots display the RTP percentage and the maximum win (expressed as a multiplier, e.g., 10,000×) in the paytable. These two numbers together tell you the game's overall risk/reward profile at a glance.
